Decks & fences
Staining & Sealing
Decks, fences, and outdoor wood, sealed to survive a full Minnesota year.
Stain fails differently than paint does. Rather than peeling in sheets it goes patchy and grey, usually starting on the horizontal surfaces that take standing water and direct sun. Getting a deck properly cleaned and dry before sealing is most of the work.
Product choice matters here more than it does elsewhere. Solid stains hide more and last longer on worn wood, while semi-transparent finishes show the grain but want a surface in better condition to start with. We'll walk that trade-off with you rather than picking for you.

How the job actually runs.
Clean and strip
Grey, weathered fibers and any failing finish taken off so the new coat can bite.
Sand where needed
Rough or splintered boards sanded so the surface is safe underfoot and takes stain evenly.
Let it dry out
Wood has to be genuinely dry before sealing. Rushing this is the usual reason a deck finish fails in a season.
Apply the finish
Stain or sealer worked in properly, with attention to end grain and railings where water sits.
Staining & Sealing questions, answered.
Solid or semi-transparent stain?
Semi-transparent shows the wood grain and is easier to recoat later, but it wants boards in reasonable condition. Solid stain covers more and lasts longer on older, weathered decking. We'll look at your wood and give you a straight recommendation.
How often does a deck need redoing?
Horizontal surfaces take the most punishment and generally need attention sooner than railings and vertical boards. Exposure, sun, and how well it was prepped last time all move that number, so we'd rather assess it than quote you a figure.
Can you stain a brand-new deck?
Usually it needs to weather first — new pressure-treated lumber often holds too much moisture to take a finish properly. We'll tell you if yours needs to wait.
