House painters serving northwest Minnesota

Peeling siding, chalky trim, a deck that's gone grey, or a paint job someone else rushed two summers ago — most of the calls we get start with a finish that failed early. It's rarely the paint's fault. A coating can only hold on to what's underneath it, and when a surface isn't washed, scraped back, and primed properly, the best product on the shelf will still let go.

Ultimate Painting is a residential painting contractor based near Erskine, serving homeowners across northwest Minnesota. We handle exterior and interior painting, deck and fence staining, and cabinet and trim refinishing — and we're backed by years of hands-on experience running paint crews and managing multi-site jobs.

Our estimates are free and there's no obligation. If a project needs more prep than you were expecting, we'll tell you up front and show you why, rather than quoting low and cutting the prep to make the number work. The scope you agree to is the scope you get, written down.

02Common problems

The problems we get called about most.

Most calls start with a symptom rather than a service. Here's what's usually behind them, and what we do about it.

Paint is peeling or flaking off the siding

Usually a prep or moisture problem rather than a paint problem. We find where the finish has lost its grip, take it back to something sound, prime the bare areas, and deal with whatever was letting water in — otherwise the new coat goes the same way.

The color has faded and the surface feels chalky

Chalking is the binder breaking down under UV. It has to be washed off completely, because a new coat applied over chalk is effectively sitting on dust and will not bond.

The deck has gone grey and splintery

Weathered surface fibres and any failing finish need to come off, rough boards get sanded, and the wood has to dry properly before sealing. Rushing the drying is the single most common reason a deck finish fails within a season.

The kitchen looks dated but new cabinets aren't in the budget

Refinishing is usually a fraction of replacement. Doors and drawer fronts come off and get sprayed for a smooth, factory-style finish; the boxes stay in place so you keep your storage throughout.

Trim lines are messy from the last paint job

Clean cut lines come from masking properly and taking the time at the edges. It's the part of an interior job you notice every day, so it's the part worth doing slowly.

The last contractor went quiet mid-job

That's the complaint we hear most, and it's why communication is a written promise here rather than a slogan. You get a call the week of your job with your start date, updates if weather moves it, and a walkthrough at the end before anything is called finished.

Why paint fails faster up here

Northwest Minnesota is genuinely hard on an exterior. Temperatures swing through freeze-thaw cycles for months, and every one of those cycles works at any gap, crack, or lifted edge in the finish. Water gets behind the coating, freezes, expands, and pushes it off the substrate. That's why a repaint that skipped caulking and spot-priming often looks fine through the first winter and starts failing in the second.

Sun exposure does the other half of the damage. On most houses here, the south and west elevations weather visibly faster than the sheltered sides — the finish chalks, color fades, and the surface breaks down while the north wall still looks almost new. We estimate each side of a house on its own for exactly that reason, rather than pricing the whole exterior as one uniform surface.

Shade brings a different problem. North-facing walls under tree cover hold moisture and pick up growth that has to be washed off completely before anything is coated over it. Painting over that traps it, and the new finish fails from underneath.

What proper prep actually involves

"Prep" is the word every painter uses and the step most often shortened, because it's invisible in the finished job and it's where the hours are. On an exterior, it means washing off chalk, dirt, and growth and letting the surface dry properly; scraping failing paint back to a sound edge; sanding those edges so the repaint doesn't telegraph them; spot-priming bare wood; and caulking the gaps where water would otherwise track in behind the finish.

Inside, it means moving or wrapping furniture, covering floors, filling nail holes and cracks and sanding them flat, and priming patches, stains, and any strong color change so the finish covers evenly instead of flashing. On cabinets it means degreasing every face — kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking grease that ordinary cleaning won't shift, and any coating over it peels at the handles and around the range first.

None of this is exotic. It's just time, and it's the difference between a finish that lasts and one you're repainting in three years. When we hand you a written estimate, the prep is itemized on it so you can see exactly what you're paying for.

09Common questions

Questions we get asked.

Do you charge for an estimate?

No. Estimates are free and there's no obligation. We come out, walk the project with you, and give you an honest written quote either way.

What areas do you serve?

Northwest Minnesota, based near Erskine — including Crookston, Thief River Falls, Bemidji, East Grand Forks, Fosston, and the surrounding towns. If you don't see your town listed, ask anyway; it's usually still a yes.

Do you do interior work in the winter?

Yes. Interior painting runs year-round. Exterior work is seasonal in Minnesota, so the schedule for outside jobs follows the weather.

How far ahead should I book?

Exterior season fills up, so earlier is better if you want a specific window. Get in touch and we'll tell you honestly what the schedule looks like rather than promising a date we can't hold.

What size projects do you take on?

Anything from a single room or a deck through to a full exterior repaint or a whole-home interior. If you're planning several things at once — exterior plus the deck, or interior alongside a cabinet refinish — quote them together and the scheduling is simpler.

Do I need to be home while you work?

Not usually. We'll agree access and colors up front, keep you updated through the job, and walk the finished work with you at the end.

Ready for a free estimate?
